Figleafing Through history: Dynamics of Dress

5.Comments:

1. The sketches that are provided are very helpful! It's better than too much detail because now you can actually see how each of the clothing that's being desribed in a picture.
2. The chinese silk cloth seems to be very famous, it's in every bit of the section! I guess the chinese silk impacted alot in other cultures. It's included also in the roman toga.
3. Wow the clothing that people wear also symbolize or represent something elsewise. I didn't realize that.
4. There were some interpetation on the way christians dress and what it symbolized. It was also a different type of toga. Then a little history about christ and Mary and what they wore. It's pretty cool that the book goes around in all aspects.
5. Back to the chinese this time, they were focused more on what they wore. It was elegant long flowing robes. Made of silk and ribbons! OH I definitly want to try one of those on!

4.Questions:

1. How much would silk be back then? Or what would be valuable enough to trade for silk?
2. Is there any other clothing that symbolize more ideas or thoughts?
3. How did each culture come up with such different styles?
4. Around what time period is this?

3. Vocabulary:

1.Precarious: dependent on circumstances beyond one's control; uncertain; unstable; insecure
2.Insatiable: not satiable; incapable of being satisfied or appeased
3.Asceticism: the doctrine that a person can attain a high spiritual and moral state by practicing self-denial, self-mortification, and the like.

2. Literary Terms:

1. Allusion: The reference to Christ and christianity.
2. Imagery: The detailed and describtion of the chinese elegant women's robes.
