Figleafing Through History: The Dynamics of Dress

5.Comments:
1. First there was a comparison of the english old dress and the french dress. That the english dresses were more simplified and in a gentle way they can attract people while the french dresses were more expossing.
2.There are many words that you can use for dresses. And the have a specific name. I think that's really cool how people came to develope different ideas for gowns and dresses.
3. When and english suit became known to the rest of the world. The strongest cultures start to think of what they dress EX: Japan: kimono, China: Robe, India: Dhoit, turban was losing what they were trying to represent.
4. Then next were comparison and different reasoning on the kimona and chinese dragon robes but because both are made of silk and sewed with detail pictures. They start to recongize that both is different depending on the situation. Like the samuri's kimona and the orginal women's kimono.
5. The last few pages were back to the modern world. Where everything from ages ago coem back and help us to a better path to the clothing /fashion world. There is the closing and they are just presenting the idea how history of dresses and clothes can have a big impact on today with technology of the sewing machine.

4.Questions:
1. Why weren't some other countries mentioned?
2. Until now, do people still trade and creat their cultural clothing styles from years/centuries ago?

FIGLEAFING THROUGH HISTORY: The Dynamics of Dress.

5. Comments:

1. I also realized that the ruffs on the Europeans styles back during around 1500-1800s where, there would be big ruffs around the necks. They said the ruffs seems to evolved into different mulitple sytles in Europe.
2. There were some information on Spain and Christopher Columbus, and while that happens during the Renaisance perferd cloth was velvet, ruffs and weave. That distanced the East and West for decreasing trade matters related to silk.
3. The next few pages were soem diagrams of Europeans styles and the ruffs tranforming.
4. Around the 18th century, China was still influncial to the world except they weren't like they use to when trading with silk or any other goods because they were conquered by the mongols which made them very humililated.
5. Queen Elizabeth also made a difference in the ruffles. In the Elizabethan period, she decides to cute the ruffs from all around her head to only the back of her head. Then lowered the neck line to expose her breast almost bare. ANd puffs around the arms lines and a bolster to support her hips to make the skirt squarish. Also with adding of the wired laced wings behide the ruffs. Then from there children and women were trangressing their dressing forms.

4.Questions:

2. Why did Elizabeth change the whole "dress code" was it just because she wanted to or she ahd a reason?

1.Overview:
It's pretty long overview. So After beign sick and arrived hoem again. With a good talk to Ye Ye about her future and how she should keep longing to her goals. She also heard news of the rest of the family. then after returning to school she enters a writing competition. But after awhile after aknowlegding Ye Ye's death she became more depressed. Out of the air after months later, she was ordered home by her father. A suprise in her eyes, she had won the competition and was going to England with her brother. The memior ends in a letter she recieved from Aunt Baba still longing to see her and wished her the best. As Aunt Baba told her a story of a chinese Cinderella she compared her to Adeline as a cinderella. Addressing her as "My Chinese Cinderella" . Where I thought that became the title of her memior.

THOUGHTS:
I loved this book! it was very touching at time I also feel and suffer the thigns she been through. It hurts to know that your own family doesn't want you. I can feel it in her writing, she was really describtive about it. Adeline used literary terms but most of them were never simile or metaphore. It mostly imagery and allusions refering her life to something else. The ending was fantastic. I loved how she uses Aunt Baba's letter to contrast everything together and ended with a great title for the book.

ROAR Book 5/4/3/5/1!

Almost done you guys! :] HAH yeahs my whole book posts are due today so there is going to be a double post! I wonder how it's going to end. LOL enjoy!

5.Comments
1)So this is really cruel. During the period when the Communist was taking over, Niang and their father decided to bring her back to Tianjin in a boarding school ALL BY HERSELF! What are they thinking?! The communist was coming there i na few months and arresting all those people but here they are leaving her there alone....
2)What kind of father is Adeline's father? He doesn't know her name, or birthday or how old she is. To him she like a stranger. When he decided to give his birthday to her, she was so happy to know her own birthday now since no one every told her and she was excited as well since it'll be her father's birtday too on November 30.
3)She stayed at the boarding school for a few months by herself. She had written letters to her family and recieved none back. She had to speak english and french in that school. Chinese wasn't allowed and in her class there was only a few girls. It was the same school she went in elementry school.
4) As days pass, more girls had left. In the middle of December, she was the only student left. Now she was really alone and there wasn't anything to do. All she wished was to be with her Aunt Baba and live peacefully. She was often sad and think of her family. In some days the nuns will fuss about her and make her feel cared.
5) One day when she was playing, her aunt came to pick her up. Her aunt was Niang's older sister, and without Niang's knowing her aunt said she'll bring Adeline to Hong Kong and reunite back to her father and Niang. But Aunt Baba wouldn't be there, she'll be still in Shanghai.

4.Questions:
1)What ikind of parents are they? Leavign her like that to risk herself.....(tehy don't deserve to be parents at all.)
2) Why does Aunt Baba want to stay in Shanghai? Because the communist is matching there soon too.
3) Does Aunt Reine knows how awful Niang treats her? And where did she hear from to get Adeline?
4) Why were the nuns still there? Aren't they afraid as well?

When Tianjin was in contro lof the communist and when all the students and people fleed to the south. She was the only student left. Until one day one of her unexpected aunts came and picked her up and told her that they were going to Hong Kong. There she's fianlly rescued and going along.

5.Comments:

1. The next day, Wu Chun-Mei asked her why didn't she come back to the party like she promised. Adeline is feeling shame and couldn't tell her what had happen......I feel really pity for her because she can't even tell her friends the harsh treatment at home.
2. No sooner, their school was having a class president election and together Wu Chun-Mei was helping Adeline winning the elction for her.
3. Adeline won the election and was super shocked when Wu Chun-Mei and her friends showed up at her house unexpectedly to suprise her. That's when things goes terribly wrong, Niang found out and slapped her a few times. And as Adeline told her friends to leave as she is crying. Wu Chun-Mei figured it out.....I'm actually really glad Wu Chun-Mei found out because then she would know why Adeline is just so quiet and different from eveyone else.
4. After Adeline's father and Niang ordered maybe she should leave and go to a orphanage or to just send her away. Adeline in tears and fearing the seperation of Autn Baba and her. They said it was all Aunt Baba's fault to influence her in such bad ways.
5. After the next day at school, she was still considered as the persident, she felt happiness in her and in way she wished she would always stay in school. But when she got home, her clothes was packed and immeditely she found out she going back to Tianjin with Niang and her father.

4.Questions:

1.Why couldn't they understand that it was Aunt Baba's fault? Is it like their culture to not trust the girls instead of boys? Why didn't Ye Ye do anything to stop this?
2. Why are they going back to Tianjin? Why not someplace else? and Who is going with them?
3. What will happen to Adeline? Will she really have to leave the house?
4. What will happen to the rest of the family? Like aunt Baba and Ye Ye?

3. Vocabulary:

2.Hyperbole: When Niang said that Adeline was "NOTHING! NOTHING! NOTHING!" ( I catch up that Niang always uses these hyperboles agaisnt Adeline.)

1. OverView:
SO this section of the memoir, is that Adeline was running for President in school and apperently she won. Her friends sneaked up at her doorsteps and suprise her. This was an outrage to Niang! She was very mad and she convinced Adeline's father to her side. She persuade him that Aunt Baba is teh bad influence to Adeline. In the end she was beaten and to go tell ehr friends to leave. Her friends saw her in pain yet they know Adeline is still one of their best friends. The next day Adeline finds out Niang and father decied that they move back to Tianjin. Adeline was so frustrated about having to say goodbye to her Aunt Baba.... (to be continue =)

1. It was so mean to rist Adeline's PLT(the duck she loved very much) just to see if Jackie( the dog) is well trained. As a result PLT died after beign attacked from Jackie. NO ONE seems to care that PLT was actaully Adeline's bets friend at home. SHe was hurted and very sad over the duck's death.
2. I am very frustrated with Niang and I wished she never appeared because she is the worst person ever! Just because Adeline wanted to go to a birthday party for once in her life, she get caught be adcident when Wu Mei called her to invite her back to the party on a holiday when everyone thought it was a school day. And then Niang insulted Adeline's mother and didn't give Adeline any food until her father come home and when he does come home, she gets wips because Niang lied and told her father lies. I seriously didlike Niang.
3. Adeline's childhood is very unforunate, she didn't get to do teh thigns she deserved. She didn't get to parcipate in any fun family out goings or friends.
4. Big sister was married teh same way Niang was married, Adeline's big sister was only 17 and was marrying to a guy she doesn't know. She is really happy too, and there they went on tehir honey moon. But before she left her big sister lied about a gift from aunt baba and manipulated her feelings. Adeline was very hurt for aunt baba.
5. Her father is not smart either, I keep thinking why does he not stand on his daughter's side. because everything that Adeline went through was so harsh and her even her closest belongings and loved one left her slowly. The duck, and aunt Baba becasue father ordered aunt baba to be seperated since he thought that she was a bad influence.

4.Questions:
1. Why can't Adeline go to the birthday party? What was so bad about goignt o a birthday party?
2. Why isn't Ye Ye or anyone helping Adeline at all when she was beaten by her father or when they caused her duck to die?
3. Why is third brother being nice to her again after manipulated her feelings?

1.Overview:
1. During this section of teh book, Adeline is facing many difficulties including being beaten and hurt beign scold at and everything. She wasn't able to attend any fun things instead when she tries to sneak she ends up beign hurt anyways. Her ducklign was killed by the house dog when the stupid father and Niang wanted to see if the dog was smart enough. (ARGH! this is just really mean..WOW i mean....isn't there anotehr way?!?) Anyways and then she was just alone, crying.

CHINESE CINDERELLA.
-Adeline Yen Mah

Pages -1-20
5. Comments:
1-The story took place in 1941 when Adeline was still a young girl in kindergarten. She is very smart and active in school and very obident in the family.
2-In the chinese culture, in the family they don't call each other by name but by the eldest to youngest in numerical order.
3-Thier culture also perfer males children over females. And because of that fact and that Adeline's mother died after having her, causing her to have the most disadvantage in the family. Even her biological siblings despise her and of course their stepmother, Niang.
4-The setting is during the WWII. And at the time period the french and japanese was controlling some region of where her family was living, Tianjin. So then her siblings and her goes to a catholic school and in different with a regular chinese family.
5-They were pretty rich. Also Nai Nai (grandmother in chinese) died after having a stroke. And from then their stepmother took control.

4.Questions:
1-Was it appropriate for Niang to marry Adeline father at a young age? Isn't it agaisnt the law? When she was seventeen she was already married.
2-Why don't their father do anything for them when Niang is treating her childern better than his?
3-Bandaging the feet was a really wierd custom, was there any other custom appealing for the females?
4-Was her religion buddism? Since her grandmother died, it was taken place in a temple with buddists. Is it alright to believe in buddism when there are influence in a catholic religion?

2-Imagery: EX ( When her siblings took all of Adeline's dragon's eye fruit. It seems such a pity image in my mind that how could tehy hate her so much.

1. Overview:
1- During these 20 pages of the begining of the novel, Adeline seems like she will have a tough life, considering how her family treats her. The only perso nshe can depend most of the time was her aunt BAba. Her mother died after giving birth to her which sense everyone that she in bad luck. That's why everyone don't think of her as much. After awhile Her father married a half french half chinese lady (sh'e only seventeen) and she became her stepmother. No longer Nai Nai died and that's where Niang ( tehir stepmother) takes in the lead.
